Job Description
The Carlisle Group has been retained to find a Vice President of Staff Underwriting. Our client is a growth stage technology and data-driven commercial MGA and insurance wholesaler, leading innovation in the market. They have more than 40 specialty programs and have built an end-to-end, sophisticated insurance platform that connects a broad network of insurance markets and distribution channels with proprietary technology and data analytics capabilities. Backed by one of the leading private equity firms and led by a forward-thinking management team, our client is combining the world of insurance and technology to create an Insurtech powerhouse. This is a remote location role.
Responsibilities:
Underwriting Governance
- Establish underwriting standards and best practices for each MGA business unit. Collaborate with Business Unit leaders to develop an underwriting value proposition for each program ensuring favorable loss ratios and competitive advantage through coverage grant, risk selection, price segmentation, and distribution. Ensure specific underwriting strategies are in place to control high hazard risks such as Construction Defects, New York Labor Law, and Automobile.
- Oversee internal underwriting audit and quality assurance efforts.
- Collaborate with BU leaders to establish underwriting referral standards and processes, including audit trail documentation.
- Collaborate with the compliance team to ensure processes and program details are compliant.
- Establish and maintain underwriting authority processes and documentation.
Product Development & Management
- Lead the Artificial Intelligence strategy as it is related to underwriting. Ensure AI underwriting processes deployed in the business units are controlled, accurate, replicable, and deliver measurable efficiency improvements while maintaining underwriting standards, compliance, and proper documentation.
- Collaborate with BU leaders to develop, refine, and implement policy forms and underwriting guidelines. Maintain a library of policy forms, underwriting guidelines, rating tables, and other program documentation for the various business units.
- Collaborate with Claims leaders to ensure that claims feedback is utilized when making underwriting decisions and developing products.
- Collaborate with Product Managers and BU leaders on scorecards, underwriting data integrity, and key performance indicators.
- Monitor emerging liability and compliance issues and ensure the Business Units are prepared and protected.
- Manage third party data vendors and evaluate external data tools for underwriting advantage and efficiency.
External Constituencies
- Serve as underwriting liaison with MGA carrier and reinsurer partners on underwriting and performance reporting and treaty submission.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree is a plus. Industry certifications are strongly desired.
- 15+ years progressively increasing responsibility in commercial lines underwriting. Require deep experience with construction and contractor commercial lines underwriting.
- Strong small to mid-market casualty experience in construction.
- Experience with New York labor law is highly desired.
- Prefer both admitted and surplus lines formats.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with product management and actuarial with leading commercial lines carriers as an underwriter and underwriting manager.
- Exceptional critical and systems thinking skills. Experience with process design and automation.
- Executive-level communication skills: Written, verbal and presentation (in-person and virtual formats).
Salary: $220,000 – $250,000
